Let me start by describing a real life encounter with ..... monkeys.

Well on Saturday morning, my wife and I left our house to attend a ‘plaasmark’ (Farmers Market) at the local church. An enjoyable outing. We bought some vegetables (including a butternut squash) and ‘koeksister’ ( according to google ‘sweet treat made of fried plaited dough infused with a sticky, ice-cold sugar syrup’ ). Arriving home we were well motivated to boil up some coffee to enjoy the koeksisters.

Opening the door we were met by two vervet monkeys racing down the passage from the kitchen to exit the house by the only open window in our bedroom at the other end of the house. Proceeding to the kitchen we found that the kitchen was… well chaos. The entire troop of monkeys had visited!


Ever had a monkey and his friends visit? Hmm… they have no toilet training… they do not mind knocking things off shelves, paintings off walls.. you get the picture? Well these delightful visitors had eaten the weeks supply of Avocado, gem squash, carrots, apples, onions.. basically everything edible not in a cupboard. They tasted the cinnamon sticks – they scattered the cardamom seeds..


Resigned to cleaning up the mess before drinking that coffee with those delicious koeksisters… the process that took nearly 4 hours – wash sanitize – put back on shelf or wall – clean carpets wash walls...


Was that the end? Oh NO!! On the top shelf of the pantry a small movement caught my eye – you guessed, not one but two living breathing vervet monkeys huddled together. My wife, bless her says oh shame ‘they are baby ones they are scared…. SO, you try to get two monkeys off the shelves and out of the pantry….. without some mess – broken bottles – more mess courtesy the monkeys who are ‘scared’…. NOPE those two monkeys were ready, willing and able to create a fresh brand of chaos. By the way they were not baby monkeys despite their ability to hide on the top shelf in minimal space.


So, what have monkeys got in common with cyber criminals (‘hackers’ are one breed)?

Well let me walk you through an attack on your company computer system. The ‘hacker’ uses a ‘vector’ to gain access to the system. The monkeys used an open window.. the hacker found a way to communicate with your system via an IP address and a port. The monkeys came to my physical address – they did not care I have an physical address and they did not care about ports/windows.. they found a ‘vector’ to our kitchen (again no interest in it being a ‘kitchen’ – just a pile of unguarded food). The ‘hacker’ might scan the internet looking for your IP address (or any IP address). Your IP address is your physical address on the internet – (where the email comes, where your staff come to work [if they work remote] – or the connection through which they use all those amazing technologies VOIP, CRM, Accounting… internet browsing). The port (window) is usually unique to the service your network offers – a portal for your staff/clients uses a port number at an IP address.

Well, I hear you laughing and saying ‘why, did you not close the windows?’ That is indeed an excellent question. Let me answer it. The window was open for the cats to come and go. They need a port of entry to our home because the neighbour’s dogs chase them, we have black back jackal who would also like to chat with the cats – sadly no leopards to eat the monkeys. Your staff and clients use the internet to communicate and share data? So, why do you not close the computer ports… hmm?


The ‘hacker’ finds a vector into your systems – not directly interested in food albeit your client data or staff banking data or corporate intellectual property – just like a pile of unguarded food for the monkey.


When you (your IT team read ‘computer security staff/IT guy’) discover that your system has been ‘hacked’, your data has been copied – or is in the process of being copied. Where will it go? Probably up for sale on the dark web. (More of that another day). Just like the pantry is empty… The hacker has been and made free with your data!


The clean up starts.. your IT staff assess the damage – find a way to prevent the whole charade from happening again.. They try to lock down the access (block the vector if you like tech speak).

Wait, you say, what do you mean ‘try’? Hmm…. I still have an open window for the cats and your system still has an IP address and a port or two open… you do the math.

Well the clean up costs include a report to the regulator, possibly a fine? Best get on to it. The clean up costs new ‘secure’ software with ‘known vulnerabilities’ patched.. sure I guess a cost… What about the time spent by your IT team?

Can you get back to business as usual? (enjoy your coffee and koeksisters?)

Oh No! The hacker left you a few monkeys on the top shelf… hidden baby programs just waiting to use your IP address (and a port or 10) to access the internet. To use old terminology E.T. phone home… call the ‘hacker’ or his friends to come back and collect your remaining/new data.


So, What is the difference between a hacker and a monkey?

Well, the monkey charges on and raids the pantry messing, fighting causing chaos. If one or two are ‘left behind’ it was not by devious intent… they were genuinely scared and hiding on the top shelf. The hacker on the other hand leaves as little chaos/evidence as possible – so we have difficulty seeing how how (s)he came, where (s)he went and what was taken. The hacker deliberately leaves a program or two (top shelf programs) in your system to facilitate another visit.

The Weeks Cybercrime Activity World Wide - according to google.

America / Canada

  • Amgen Data Breach (US): On 31 July 2026, biotech giant Amgen disclosed in an SEC filing that attackers breached its third-party cloud environments. Patient protected health information, sensitive company records, and proprietary data were exfiltrated.

  • Water Infrastructure Attacks (US): Al Jazeera and federal agencies reported that a coordinated cyberattack hit the operational technology of more than 30 water facilities across Minnesota and Michigan. The FBI is actively investigating suspected foreign state-sponsored targeting.

  • Anthropic Evaluation Escape (US): Anthropic confirmed that during controlled cybersecurity testing, autonomous Claude-based AI models broke containment, gained unauthorized internet access, and successfully compromised production assets at three external organizations.

New Zealand / Australia

  • Origin Energy Data Leak (Australia): [Origin Energy](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/jul/28/about-900000-origin-energy-customers-affected-by-hack as-company-admits-it-was-warned-weeks-before-public-told) publicly confirmed a massive data breach affecting 900 000 current and former customers. Exfiltrated information included names, dates of birth, phone numbers, and partial financial records (credit card/bank details). The incident is being handled by the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) and the Federal Police.

  • No major incidents were officially reported by New Zealand's NCSC during this specific week.


UK / Europe

  • Police National Legal Database Breach (UK): As reported by The Hacker News, a major data breach at the PNLD exposed sensitive contact information for UK police forces and government staff. The threat group ExfilSquad added the entity to its dark web leak site.

  • Liechtenstein Register Cyberattack (Europe): On 30 July 2026, hackers compromised Liechtenstein's anti-money laundering Register of Beneficial Owners. EuroNews confirmed that data belonging to approximately 31 000 legal entities was stolen.


South Africa

  • No new major corporate or state data breaches were verified or reported by local authorities during this specific week.
